Biography

Dr. Rana PANT, born 1964 in Essen, Germany, is environmental engineer by training (Technical University Berlin). He holds a PhD in engineering from the Darmstadt University of Technology with a thesis in the area of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in Design for Environment (DfE). Before joining the European Commission in June 2008 he worked over 8 years with a multinational consumer goods company on topics related to integrated waste management and LCA. From 2005 until April 2008 he (co-)chaired the LCA Steering Committee of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC, Europe), the leading scientific organisation in the LCA area in Europe. Since Rana joined the European Commission in the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, he has been dealing with applying Life Cycle Thinking to solid waste management, Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA), the European Platform on LCA (EPLCA) and the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) Handbook. More recently he guided as team leader the technical/scientific development of the Environmental Footprint for products and organisations (as reflected in Recommendation 2013/179/EU).
