Biography
Gerard graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast in 2012. During his degree, he completed a year of industrial experience, working both in Haiti and France. In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake Gerard worked for Concern Worldwide on a large shelter programme in Port au Prince. Here he witnessed the complexities and challenges that are faced in any humanitarian response. Unfortunately illness led to a move to Paris, France where he worked for Oger International. Here the remarkable contrast with his work in Haiti was evident and was the origin of a growing interest in sustainable development and the role of the engineer in achieving it.
After completing his degree, Gerard joined the University of Cambridge as an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development student. Here he completed a dissertation entitled “Afghanistan: Repatriation & Resettlement.”
He returned to the centre one month after finishing his MPhil to start a PhD in the Life Cycle Analysis of Civil Infrastructure. Gerard will seek to prove how whole life carbon concepts provide the way to reduce carbon and how concentration on capital carbon alone, misses the point for infrastructure.
