Biography
Jenny is in the first year of her PhD and is a freelance water engineer with more than 8 years of experience in development and evaluation of projects focused on EU Sustainability Policy and the design of roads, railways and hydraulic systems.
PhD title: Fluid mechanics optimising organic synthesis
The importance of fluid mechanics in the search for 'green technology' in the synthesis of organic chemicals is only beginning to be understood. Motivated by a new approach, the Vortex Fluidics Device (VFD), and the high yields it can achieve, this project will study at a fundamental level the fluid mechanics of the VFD and related technologies, and seek to understand both why high yields are achieved and how the processes based around them may be further enhanced. Jenny's PhD project will involve theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches to understanding the fluid mechanics, along with interactions with chemists to understand details of the reactions and how they are affected by different fluid mechanical environments (such as high shear, dissipation, helicity, etc.).
