Epithelial polarization by the planar cell polarity complex is exclusively non–cell autonomous | Science

Fri, 21/03/2025 - 13:01
For cells to polarize collectively along a tissue plane, asymmetrically localized planar cell polarity (PCP) complexes must form intercellular contacts between neighboring cells. Yet, it is unknown whether asymmetric segregation of PCP complexes requires ...

Synaptic architecture of a memory engram in the mouse hippocampus | Science

Fri, 21/03/2025 - 13:01
Memory engrams are formed through experience-dependent plasticity of neural circuits, but their detailed architectures remain unresolved. Using three-dimensional electron microscopy, we performed nanoscale reconstructions of the hippocampal CA3-CA1 ...

Unifying spatial scaling laws of biodiversity and ecosystem stability | Science

Fri, 21/03/2025 - 13:01
While both species richness and ecosystem stability increase with area, how these scaling patterns are linked remains unclear. Our theoretical and empirical analyses of plant and fish communities show that the spatial scaling of ecosystem stability is ...

Apoplastic barriers are essential for nodule formation and nitrogen fixation in Lotus japonicus | Science

Thu, 20/03/2025 - 13:01
Establishment of the apoplastic root barrier known as the Casparian strip occurs early in root development. In legumes, this area overlaps with nitrogen-fixing nodule formation, which raises the possibility that nodulation and barrier formation are ...

Cognitive perception of circulating oxygen in seals is the reason they don’t drown | Science

Thu, 20/03/2025 - 13:01
Marine mammals rely on maintaining sufficient blood oxygen levels while diving to prevent drowning. Generally, oxygen is cognitively imperceptible to mammals that instead sense rising carbon dioxide as a proxy for low oxygen. Not perceiving oxygen, ...

Macroecological rules predict how biomass scales with species richness in nature | Science

Thu, 20/03/2025 - 13:01
Despite advances in theory and experiments, how biodiversity influences the structure and functioning of natural ecosystems remains debated. By applying new theory to data on 84,695 plant, animal, and protist assemblages, we show that the general ...

Poland’s border policies imperil river ecosystems | Science

Thu, 20/03/2025 - 13:01
In response to an influx of migrants crossing from Belarus into Poland, the Polish government plans to install 1800 poles and 4500 cameras to enforce its borders (1). To implement the plan, Poland has cut down hundreds of thousands of trees along 170 km of the Bug River, the last large unregulated river in Eastern Europe (2, 3), along Poland’s border with Belarus. To compensate for the ecosystem and biodiversity destruction, Polish authorities should restore the oxbow lakes within Polish borders and continuously monitor riverbank erosion. In the future, if there is a need to improve the riverbanks, Poland should strengthen them sustainably by using only wooden materials.

Social and environmental impacts of war in Syria | Science

Thu, 20/03/2025 - 13:01
The Syrian conflict, which began in March 2011 after an antigovernment protest (1) and culminated in the collapse of the Assad regime on 8 December 2024 (2), had profound social and environmental consequences. Beyond its devastating effects on human lives, the war has disrupted vital infrastructure, degraded natural resources, and decimated ecosystems. To address the damage, the international community should provide social, environmental, and economic assistance to the transitional government that emerged from December’s offensive by revolutionaries.
